🎨 The Art of Interstellar Adventures

The idea of Interstellar Adventures is to create an immersive TV show-like puzzle adventure, complete with compelling characters, snappy dialogue and dynamic illustrations. It was clear from the start of the project that we wanted to use comic book-style art to quickly communicate the narrative of the puzzle adventure.

The artwork behind this distinctive visual world comes from Adrián Iglesias, an Argentinian illustrator whose style turns every card into a compelling moment. This post explores how his art doesn’t just enhance Interstellar Adventures, it drives the experience.

What is Interstellar Adventures?

Interstellar Adventures is a cooperative, narrative-driven puzzle game. It’s built for two to four players and is an episodic escape-room series. Each mission brings new challenges, new creatures, and new mysteries to decipher together.

The storyline follows the crew of The Atlas, who receive a mysterious signal and set out to uncover its source. To move through the adventure, players must solve puzzles and challenges to find the number of the next adventure card.

The adventure cards are oversized cards with full artwork on every one. There are close to 250 cards, each with unique art. The hint deck for each episode also have full artwork, to keep the hint experience ‘in world’ and immersive. Multiple side decks are also used in different parts of the game, which reveal further locations and characters.

Meet the Artist: Adrián Iglesias

Argentinian illustrator Adrián Iglesias (also known online as Santaplix) has a background in comics and fine arts. His portfolio is full of expressive characters, cohesive colour palettes and action shots. Elements that combine to create beautiful storytelling.

In an interview with More Games Please, Iglesias described his visual inspirations for Interstellar Adventures:

“I drew inspiration from 1960s comics. This is reflected in a restricted colour scheme, the incorporation of halftones, and a texture reminiscent of offset printing and paper.”

The illustrated cards create the basis for the puzzles and the gameplay. Some puzzles include hidden objects or numbers which rely entirely on the illustration to be clear, but not obvious. Other puzzles need to quickly convey circumstances or information to help the players with the context of the puzzle. It was a challenge to communicate and illustrate specific puzzles, but working with Adrián has been a dream. Adrián is also a fan of Star Trek and other nostalgic sci-fi series, so it felt like he entirely understood the vision for the overall feel of the game.

A particular strength of Adrián’s is character design. The characters he developed from this game have captured the hearts of many. From Guy, the pessimistic Mycelorian (not a fun-guy!) to the strong female lead, Captain Elara Silna and even Mr Blob Monster (Pickle as he has become known), who was meant to be a side creature in a single puzzle in Episode 2, but has become a sort of project mascot and featured on UKGE exclusive pins in 2025. These characters add so much to the narrative and the play experience. They develop through the gameplay, and everyone is left with a favourite at the end. They also inspired some pretty awesome voice acting from players, which may only get a little grating over the 3 hours of gameplay.

“What captivates me the most are the puzzles within the game—paths that shift in the player’s hands, crystals that materialise, monsters lurking in enigmatic caverns, and numbers concealed in unexpected places.” – Adrián Iglesias.

Final Thoughts

The art in Interstellar Adventures helps to elevate it from another tabletop escape room to a snappy, TV show-like experience – which is exactly what we set out to create. We could not be happier with how the art turned out, and we can’t wait to see what you think.

Did you know that you, too, could become a character in the game? Adrián will draw you, a loved one, a furry friend or whatever alien you would like to brief (subject to approval, obviously) and make you part of the game. See the “become an extra” tier on the Kickstarter for more details.
